Passthroughs are used in all types of laboratories and other rooms where the environment is controlled and materials are transferred in and out. Essentially these materials will need to be disinfected or otherwise cleaned and this is where passthroughs are critical.
Passthroughs have become a primary tool in clean rooms. They are used for the controlled moving of materials in and out. Clean rooms use pass through chambers, also called passthroughs, pass-through air locks, chambers or transfer hatches because they standardize and simplify contamination-free transfer of materials in and out of a controlled environment.
How they operate varies in complexity but there is a basic set up. A pass through is typically built into a wall in the room or may be an entire room itself. It will always contain two sets of doors or hatches on either end of a chamber that cannot be opened simultaneously. A material, substance or even person enters or is placed at one end of the pass through chamber that end is sealed creating a totally sealed environment. The article or person within the pass through is then disinfected. When this is complete the hatch or door at the other end of the pass through will be able to be opened. The result is that no contaminated materials will enter the clean room. Pass through can work in both directions in the even that there is potentially hazardous materials in the clean room and there is a concern they might be transported outside.
Passthroughs are serviced regularly to ensure that they are working properly. Their proper use is a front line defense against contamination which can be costly and a threat to the health of workers.
