4 Ways To Decompress When You’re Stressed

From time to time things in life can start to pile up on your shoulders and cause you to feel stressed out.  The reasons why can vary for everyone.  Sometimes it’s personal relationships, work troubles, or even depression.  Many people aren’t sure how to handle stress when it comes their way.  Stressful moments are usually the time when people start turning to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain or engage in other self-destructive behavior.

However, relieving stress can be something as easy as taking a minute to decompress.  It doesn’t have to involve medication or screaming at the world.  Sometimes it’s as easy a small action which has a huge effect.  Here are some of the best ways to decompress when you’re feeling the stress start to accumulate. 

Take a Bath

Try taking a bath when you start to feel your body tense up.  The soothing feeling of the warm water usually takes people’s heart rate down and encourages you to start breathing slower.

You can try adding bubbles burning candles or adding essential oils for aromatherapy. Make sure that you make an effort not to dwell on your stresses or allow yourself to obsess during your time in the bath.  It’s important to take this time to relax and allow everything to melt away.  You’ll find that when you get out of the bath you’ll feel much better physically as well as emotionally.

Go Shopping

Believe it or not, shopping has psychological benefits.  This may come as exciting news to those people who love to go shopping.  When you are focused on looking for items or browsing through selections of various products your mind becomes distracted.

Since your mind is busy sorting through things and assessing prices and keeping busy visually, people usually tend to stress less.  Buying something at the end of your shopping trip isn’t always crucial.  Window shopping can be just as relaxing without having to spend a dime.  The important thing is to get out and get moving.

Go For a Run

Sometimes going for a run is the best way to work off steam and get your body into a fatigued state.  When your body is relaxed and worked to exhaustion you will find that you tend to stress a lot less. Going for a run not only clears your mind and gets your blood pumping which relieves stress, but it also does a number of beneficial things for your health.

Watch a Funny Movie

Sometimes the best thing to do to get yourself in a happy state of mind is to watch a funny movie.  When you turn on something which is funny and gets you smiling or even laughing it’s hard to stay in a distressed state.
