Bring Their Behavior To Their Attention
Depending on the personality of the person in question, they may not even know that their behavior is something that you or others are having a problem with. If this is the case, the first thing you should do is bring their behavior to their attention. And if this behavior goes unchecked for too long, it can be much harder to rein that employee back in. On the other hand, if the employee knows they’re not pulling their weight but is hoping to get by regardless, letting them know that you’ve noticed may help get them back in gear.
Be Clear With Your Expectations
Once the employee knows that their work has been called into question, it’s now up to you to make sure both of you are aware of what the exact expectations you have for that employee are. Jeff Boss, a contributor to Forbes.com, shares that the more clearly you set the expectations, the more likely your employee is to reach those expectations. If you are too vague in your expectations, that may leave too much room for interpretation, which could give you undesirable results again.

Even with clear expectations, it may be hard for your employees to find the motivation to go above and beyond the work they were doing before. Not only will this help entice your employees to do the work in an effective and efficient manner, but it can also work to show your appreciation for them when they complete a job well.
