Intimate black & white portraits of homeless people by Lee Jeffries

I think many of us, myself included, are guilty of ignoring the hundreds of homeless people we see in our city everyday. But when you look at the following pictures you are forced to face the fact that the shuffling bodies that often approach you and shake an empty paper cup your way, are people just like you with their own story to tell. A fact that is easy to forget as you force a smile and say “sorry, no change” and walk on by, silently accusing them for only wanting to spend it on drugs.

However, drug and alcohol abuse is not the only reason people become (and often remain) homeless and start sleeping rough, many suffer from mental health issues and have had troubles with their families also.

Jeffries has taken dozens of photographs. Check out his Flikr photostream here and for more information regarding homelessness in the UK and how you can help please visit St Mungo’s.
